107,500 Lasko Portable Electric Heaters Recalled

According to recent news reports Lasko Products Inc. has recalled approximately 107500 portable electric heaters due to reports of possible fire hazards. An electrical connection in the units base may overheat which could cause the base to melt resulting in the electrical connection becoming exposed. No injury reports have been received but 36 overheating reports have been received. 18 reports were received where minor property damage occurred. The recalled Lasko electric heaters are:

  • 20.5 inches by 8.25 inches by 9.25 inches
  • dark gray silver front cover black vents
  • Lasko brand name or Air King brand name printed in the center of the top of the front cover
  • Lasko Model 5540 sold at Sams Club and other places from Sept. 2002 to 2004 in a price range of $39-$49.
  • Air King Model 8540 sold mostly through W.W. Grainger Inc. from 2002 to 2004 for about $80.
  • Built in 2002 with date codes on a label on the bottom of the units that start with 2. Date codes beginning with 3 4 or 5 are not being recalled.

Those with the affected portable electric heaters are asked to immediately stop using them. They may contact Lasko for a free replacement at 1-800-363-8044 or www.laskoproducts.com.

Its fortunate that a recall is being conducted prior to any reports of injury. Faulty portable heaters can sometimes result in serious accidents that could result in injury or even death. As this harsh winter season sees the usage of many such heaters around the country both in homes and at the workplace its important that consumers are aware of any issues that such heaters may present. Its also suggested that such heaters are only used when a person is present and are not allowed to run while someone is away for an extended period of time.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
