Brad Gottschall, Johnny Thomas, Injured in St. Mary’s County, MD Box Truck Accident

St. Mary’s County, MD — 61-year-old Brad Gottschall was injured in a box truck accident that occurred on Tuesday, December 15, around 6:20 p.m. on Route 235 in Hollywood, Maryland.

According to police, 34-year-old Johnny Thomas was heading south on Route 235 when he allegedly crossed over the center median and hit a Ford F250, being driven by Gottschall. The force of the impact caused Gottschall’s vehicle to then strike a Mercury sedan, being driven by 34-year-old Erin King.

Thomas and Gottschall were both rushed to Prince George’s County Shock Trauma. It does not appear that King was injured in the collision. Police are still investigating to find out what factors may have contributed to the accident.

Commentary:

When drivers of large commercial vehicles aren’t paying attention to the road, serious accidents can occur. While we don’t know what happened in this accident, if police reports are correct, the driver veered into oncoming traffic.

While this could have been because of something outside the driver’s control, such as a medical issue or a mechanical failure, it is far more likely that the driver was driving while distracted.

I see accidents like these all the time, and often, the trucking company has neglected to hire safe drivers or properly train their drivers. It’s important to investigate these accidents to find out what happened so that future accidents like these won’t occur.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
