After the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) detected that a potentially toxic substance was being used in Hylands Teething Tablets the manufacturer of the product ordered a recall of all of the over-the-counter tablets. The potentially toxic substance is belladonna which according to the FDA can cause serious harm to high doses. The FDA said it has already received some reports in which children who had used the teething tablets were exhibiting signs of belladonna toxicity. Reports were also received that children had taken more than the recommended number of tablets because the containers for the teething tablets did not have child-resistant caps.
Symptoms of belladonna toxicity can include seizure breathing difficulty excessive sleepiness lethargy skin flushing muscle weakness constipation agitation or difficulty urinating. Parents are recommended to take their child to a doctor if they notice such symptoms occurring. The tablets being recalled are:

Product manufacturers have a legal duty to ensure the safety of their products before releasing them to the public. While this is the case for every product that comes to market one would hope that extensive testing and other failsafes would have prevented such a product like this one made explicitly for children from entering the marketplace.
