Jasper, TX — According to the local news reports, an ammonia gas leak happened on Monday, March 18, and left one man hospitalized. Jimmy Granger, an employee for Coburn Supply Pipe Yard, was taken to a local hospital after he breathed in ammonia fumes that leaked from the Crystal Ice Company.
Jasper PD stated that Granger was working at Coburn at about 2:00 p.m. when an ammonia tank was being repaired at the Crystal Ice Company, located on Fletcher Street. The pop-off valve for the tank broke while it was being repaired and ammonia gas was leaked down the block to the Coburn Supply Pipe Yard, where Granger came into contact with it.
He was taken to a hospital and another worker, Tim Beddingfield, claimed to have also felt the effects of the ammonia. He did not seek treatment, however. The cause of the leak is believed to be accidental, but an investigation will likely follow.
