Michael Smith Injured by Explosion at Air Liquide in La Porte, TX
News sources from La Porte, TX have said that the identity of the injured worker at the Air Liquide explosion on Saturday morning (February 9, 2013) has been tentatively identified as Michael Smith. According to the reports, the explosion at the large gas processing plant happened at about 7:30 a.m. on Saturday morning and also took the life of another worker, 30-year old Javier Ortiz.

Smith was working at the plant on Saturday morning with 12 other people including Ortiz when the explosion happened. 7 other employees were outside the metal building and 6 were inside when the explosion ignited the building and set it on fire. Smith was seriously injured and was airlifted to a burn center in Galveston, TX while emergency response workers found Ortiz’ body in the debris later. The cause of the explosion hasn’t been identified by authorities from the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating the matter.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.
