Exploding Pressure Fryer at KFC in Forest City Leaves AJ & Ty Motley Seriously Burned

Forest City, NC — The officials at a specialty burn center in Augusta, Georgia said that a set of twin brothers from Forest City, North Carolina were admitted to their facility last month after a serious explosion at a local KFC restaurant. They were identified as AJ and Ty Motley, 19 years old.

The Motley brothers were apparently working at a local KFC restaurant in Forest City on Thursday, July 16, 2015 when a pressure fryer suddenly exploded.

The large machine sent burning oil everywhere and severely burned the twins. They were rushed to a hospital, then transferred to the Augusta facility to be further treated.

It appears that Ty has substantially worse injuries than AJ, according to the news reports.

KFC has released the following statement, but have not actually explained what happened yet.

We have strict operating procedures to keep our employees safe and it is among our highest priorities. The employees who were injured are being treated and we are conducting an investigation to determine the cause of this accident.

Allegedly, a worker at the KFC store said there had been problems with that pressure cooker in the past.

Commentary:

If any of you took a course in rhetoric (or even watched a political debate), then you know how corporate-speak apologies can often sound like polite ways of excusing bad behavior. I’m not trying to imply that KFC thinks the accident was the fault of these teens, but they sure don’t make any big effort to sound sorry for what happened.

Has anyone looked into the possibility that the explosion was caused by some faulty or defective equipment? I would seriously look into that, especially considering the allegations that the pressure cooker had issues in the past.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
