Lake Station, IN — A man was injured and taken to a hospital on Wednesday morning of last week (July 29, 2015) in an accident with a flatbed truck. Later, the Indiana State Police confirmed that one of their on-duty troopers, 26-year old Jacob Raupp, was hurt after his patrol SUV crashed into the back of a flatbed truck.
This happened along I-80/94 before 11:00 a.m., the news said.
Raupp was driving his patrol SUV west along I-80 that morning and was neared Ripley Street’s exit when he accidentally hit the back of a stopped flatbed truck. Allegedly, the traffic in front of them had slowed down.
The wreck left Trooper Raupp with very serious injuries and he was immediately rushed to an Oak Lawn hospital. At the last update, he was still being treated for his injuries. There’s no word on whether anyone else, including the truck driver, was hurt.

Commentary:
I know that the news reports here are making it sound like this officer just crashed into the back of the flatbed truck with no regard, but has anyone taken a closer look at what happened? My first question would be whether the flatbed truck had working taillights that morning, which might’ve made a difference. I know that some might accuse me of being speculative, but I like to give folks the benefit of the doubt when investigating these kinds of accidents. It doesn’t do any good to jump to conclusions.
