Savannah, GA — A pedestrian lost his leg after being hit by a car in Savannah, Georgia, on Tuesday, May 19, 2015. The accident took place at the intersection of West 52nd and Montgomery streets, around 11:30 in the morning.
A Toyota Camry was hit by a Volkswagen that was trying to make a left-hand turn onto West 52nd. The collision sent the Camry off the road and into a telephone pole at the corner, pinning Samuel Petro, a Brazilian exchange student, who was waiting to cross the street at the time.
Petro was taken to Memorial University Hospital. There’s been no report on his current condition.
The drivers of both the Camry and the Volkswagen, as well as a passenger in each vehicle, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Candler Hospital for treatment.
The accident is still being investigated.

If what news reports are saying is true, then it seems that the driver of the first vehicle is going to be held liable for the accident. Now, personal injury laws vary from state to state, obviously, but the gist of it is that if you or your actions are the proximate cause of someone else’s injuries, they would have grounds to file a claim against you. Of course, the accident is still being investigated, and there are things the police will want to look at, such as any possible defects with the vehicle itself. But barring something like that, liability for the accident will fall on the driver.
