According to local news reports, 11-year old Mercy Martinez was injured near McKinley Elementary School on December 18, 2012 after she was hit by a van. Police said that Martinez was walking with a group of friends across Ellis Street, just outside the school, when she was hit by an oncoming van did not stop in time.
Scene of the Accident
Martinez was taken to a local hospital and was treated for serious injuries. Since her stay at the hospital extended into the holiday season, a local police officer with the Petaluma Police Department helped the school and some friends organize a gift-giving expedition and delivered a carload of early Christmas presents to the hospital where Martinez was being treated. News sources said that Martinez had to undergo numerous surgeries after the accident, including surgery to remove brain, leg, and arm swelling.
