Semi-Truck Accident in Miami, FL, Injures Two on Florida Turnpike

Miami, FL — Two people were hospitalized following a multi-vehicle accident in Miami, Florida, on Wednesday, April 1, 2015. The accident happened near SW 8th Street, around 8:00 in the morning.

The accident happened when a wheelbarrow fell from the back of a truck. Several vehicles, including a double load semi-truck, swerved to avoid it. The semi rolled onto its side, and several vehicles crashed into it. In all, six vehicles were involved in the accident.

Two people were sent to Kendall Regional Hospital following the accident. One of them had suffered critical injuries and had to be extricated from their vehicle before being transported.

The names of those involved have not been released.

It’s not clear if authorities were able to speak with the driver of the vehicle that caused the accident. Police are continuing to investigate.

Any driver — whether they’re in a passenger car, a commercial truck, a motorcycle, whatever — has to make sure that their vehicle is road-worthy before getting behind the wheel. The act of driving is an implicit acknowledgment that their car is safe. So, if a truck gets out on the road, and equipment starts falling out of the back, which then causes several other people to get into accidents, that driver is going to have a lot of questions he has to answer, and you can better believe that he can be held liable for the whole thing.

Because there’s a good chance that the person responsible for this accident doesn’t have the insurance necessary to cover all the damage he’s caused, anyone inside a commercial vehicle is probably going to want to check to make sure their employer doesn’t carry UIM, or uninsured motorist coverage. A policy like this will basically cover the gap that the at-fault driver can’t with his own policy. Not all employers carry it, but many do, so it’s worth looking into.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
