Oscar Camara-Castillo Injured by Taxicab Accident in Las Vegas while Crossing Road

Las Vegas, NV — A young man was hit and injured by a taxi SUV this past Monday, March 30, in Las Vegas. Police said that Oscar Camara-Castillo, 22, was badly injured after he was hit by 60-year old Dennis Johnson’s Toyota Scion taxi at about 1:45 a.m. that morning.

This happened at the intersection of Boulder Highway and Russell Road, the news said. Camara-Castillo was trying to walk across Boulder Highway when he was hit by Johnson’s passing Checker Cab.

The accident left Camara-Castillo with major injuries and the last update said that he was in critical condition yesterday. Johnson, however, was only slightly injured.

Commentary:

If the pedestrian here ran out into traffic, then an accident reporting putting him at fault would make sense. However, it sounds like the taxi driver might’ve been able to avoid the accident, but didn’t. If that’s the case (and I think it’s wise to consider all possibilities before making assumptions), then I would be interested in seeing how the taxicab company defends their driver. At the end of the day, it’s the company that’s liable for their employee’s actions, so they’ll always try to find excuses that place someone else in the wrong. If you go with the news reports and never ask any follow-up questions, then you might not get all the facts. Taxi drivers, like other professional drivers, are held to a higher standard and must be extra careful behind the wheel.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
