Anytime I see an accident like this, I wonder if the victim was drinking at a bar before getting behind the wheel. The reason for that is Texas has what are known as dram shop laws, and these laws forbid establishments that serve alcohol from serving to those who are obviously drunk and need to be cut off. Laws like this are ignored all the time, and people are pushed over that line, and the make bad decisions and hurt themselves, and often, other people as well.
Now, laws like this aren’t meant to let drunk drivers escape all responsibility. They’re the ones getting behind the wheel, and they need to be held responsible. But laws like this are designed specifically to keep these sorts of accidents from happening. So if a bar is ignoring them by continuing to serve customers who have reached their limit, they’re actively working against that purpose, and need to be held accountable for it.
