Work Accident in Westwood, MA, Injures 17-Year Old at Frugal Fannie’s

Westwood, MA — A 17-year old was hospitalized after falling through a skylight while shoveling snow off the roof of a business in Westwood, Massachusetts. The accident took place on Tuesday, February 24, 2015, at Frugal Fannie’s Fashion Warehouse.

The 17-year old was one of several on top of the roof helping to shovel snow. The weight of the snow from recent winter storms has caused several roofs to collapse in that part of the country.

Reports say that the victim fell around 25 feet into the store. His fall was broken by a clothing rack. He was taken to a hospital in Boston for treatment. The boy’s name has not been released.

The accident is still being investigated.

Commentary

First, I find it a bit strange that the victim here was at work during school hours, regardless of whether or not school had been canceled because of the weather. Beyond that, I wonder if 1) the victim had been trained for the type of work he was being asked to do, and 2) he was given the proper safety equipment to do the job. It’s not as if someone falling while working on a raised platform is something that just can’t be planned for. If the victim here wasn’t given the proper equipment — the equipment he needed to do his job — it looks like Frugal Fannie’s has some tough questions they need to answer.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
