Etna, OH — Four children were injured and a semi-truck driver died last night (Monday, October 13, 2014) after an accident along I-70 in the Etna area of Licking County. Police identified the deceased truck driver as Rodney Williams, 50, and identified the children who were injured as Sophia, Michalis, Henry, and Zoe (ages 9-13).
The accident happened at about 9:00 p.m. on Monday night, they said, along Interstate 70. Near the exit for Route 310, there was an accident that caused traffic to back up.
The Shinas’ family minivan and two other semi-trucks were stopped in the westbound lanes, when Rodney Williams came upon the accident scene in his semi-truck.
Apparently, Williams failed to brake in time and rear-ended the Shinas’ van. The impact forced Williams’ truck off the side of I-70 and it crashed into a tree, overturning in the process.
The accident only slightly injured the four Shinas children inside the minivan, but Williams was critically hurt. He was taken to a hospital, but later died from his injuries.
The State Highway Patrol said they’d look into this some more and said they’re not sure why Williams wasn’t able to slow down in time that night.
