Rebecca Haugh Killed in Hit and Run in Laguna Vista, TX

Laguna Vista, TX — A woman was killed when she was hit by an SUV in Laguna Vista, Texas, on Tuesday morning.

Rebecca Haugh was walking along FM 510 with her husband when she was hit by an SUV that had driven off the road. The accident threw her several feet.

The driver of the SUV did  stop to render aid. But at this time, it’s unknown what caused the SUV to drive off the road.

There’s been no word on whether charges will be filed against the SUV’s driver. The crash is still under investigation.

I originally thought that the SUV’s driver had sped away after this accident, but it turns out that the woman driving did stop to render aid. Now, one of the news reports I read said that charges might be filed against the woman if it turns out that she had been on her cellphone at the time of the accident. I can’t stress enough how important it is to remain attentive behind the wheel. Any kind of cellphone activity, like texting or changing a song, can be deadly and it puts everyone else on the road in danger.

Even if the woman killed had been walking out in the roadway, if the SUV’s driver was on her phone, she wouldn’t have reacted in time anyway. I’m not sure if that still merits charges from the local police, but I would imagine failure to pay attention or failure to keep a lookout might be among the charges she’s given. Of course, I’m speculating on that front, but it’s a possibility.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
