Driver Killed in Tractor-Trailer Accident on Interstate 20 in Darlington County, South Carolina

DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC — A single-vehicle tractor-trailer accident took the life of one truck driver dead in Darlington County, South Carolina on Monday, March 31st, 2014, according to the news report from WBTW.

Police have said that they have reason to believe an as-of-yet unidentified individual was killed when the tractor-trailer they were driving drifted off the road and crashed into a concrete support pillar while driving on Interstate 20. The accident happened Monday morning.

Scene of the Accident

The driver was pronounced dead on the scene when emergency crews arrived. The driver is believed to have been alone in the truck at the time of the accident, and no other injuries were detailed in the news report.

The investigation is currently ongoing.

Commentary:

With this type of accident, many people would be quick to assume that this driver was in complete control of the vehicle during the accident, that he simply drove off the road and got in an accident, which may not be the case at all. Tractor-trailers and commercial vehicles in general are comprised of similar parts and systems that regular vehicles are, only they are more complex, and exposed to far harsher operating environments and lifespans. When any of these parts fail, serious and often fatal accidents can and do happen. Many people see the legal industry as anti-truck-driver, which is wrong, we simply fight dangerous trucking practices, such as letting trucks in disrepair on the road.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
