Commentary:
The news article may be sparse on facts, but one thing I’m sure of is that many people will view this no differently than a regular car accident, and they would be sorely mistaken. Any bar or liquor store in the State of Texas is governed by what are called ‘dram shop laws’, which were written to oversee the responsible service and sale of alcohol. If a driver is given too much to drink, or walks into a bar and is already visibly drunk, yet is served anyways, that bar can and should be held accountable for the accident if they did not take the proper steps to cut them off. Now I’m not saying the driver should go unpunished, I’m saying that both the driver AND the bar that fueled him be held to equal standards. Bars and nightclubs will only see drunk drivers as a liability when they start being held liable for drunk drivers.
