Liberty County, TX — One student and one aide were injured when their bus was hit by an 18-wheeler driver near the intersection of Highway 105 and FM 2518 on Tuesday, December 15, just after 7 a.m. The female driver of the 18-wheeler was also injured in the accident.
According to police, the 18-wheeler ran through a stop sign at the intersection, crashing into the Tarkington ISD bus, which had special needs children on board. A girl and an adult aide suffered minor injuries in the accident. The driver of the semi was also taken to a hospital.
There were four other children on board, who were not injured. Police are still investigating to find out what caused the truck driver to disregard the stop sign.

Commentary:
When drivers of large commercial vehicles like 18-wheelers don’t pay attention or disregard road signs, serious accidents like this one can occur.
While it isn’t clear what happened in this accident, if the driver is found to be negligent after some investigation, the company she works for may also bear some responsibility in the accident. This is because trucking companies are required to make sure their employees have safe driving records and are properly trained.
Again, this accident needs more investigation, but it’s important that the injured parties, who were simply passengers along for the ride, receive some justice for their suffering.
