Sarasota County, FL — Timothy Canary was injured in a hit-and-run accident that occurred while he was operating a tow truck in southbound lanes of I-75, just north of University Parkway.
According to police, Canary was wearing a reflective vest, with his high beams and flashing lights on. A dump truck came up behind and Canary noticed it didn’t slow down, so he attempted jumping out of the way. The truck still hit him, and the driver fled the scene.
Canary was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Police are still investigating, and ask anyone with information to contact them at 941-751-8350.

Commentary:
This accident needs a lot of investigative work to find out what happened, including why this driver failed to slow down and fled the scene of an accident.
I see a lot of accidents where large commercial vehicles fail to yield to an obstruction in their path, but often, after some investigation, it turns out these drivers were either tired, under the influence, or driving while distracted.
I’m not saying this was the case with this driver, but he or she did flee the scene of the accident. It’s important that the injured parties get justice for what they’ve suffered, and if the driver is found to be negligent, then the company he works for may also bear some responsibility for the accident.
