Irving, TX: Woman Injured at FedEx by Conveyor Belt

Irving, TX — A worker at the FedEx Ground facility in Irving near the Love Field Airport was taken to a hospital with critical injuries this afternoon after an accident. Police said that a woman, age unknown, was working at the FedEx facility when she accidentally got stuck on a conveyor belt.

The woman was pulled into some machinery and co-workers and emergency workers had to stop the belt and take apart the machine before the woman could be rescued.

She was immediately taken to a hospital (Parkland) and was last said to be in critical condition. Right now, the cause of the accident is still unclear and FedEx has yet to make any statements explaining what took place.

Commentary:

As the investigation is ongoing here, I’d be interested to hear from folks who work at that facility because an accident of this magnitude likely meant that something went very seriously wrong.

Employers have a duty to provide their workers with a reasonably safe working environment, and that’s especially true for employers that operate with heavy machinery — things like conveyor belts.

The article linked below explains how Texas law handles things like work-related accidents, and I think you’ll find that while our laws are slightly more friendly toward workers than most states, it’s still a system designed to benefit and protect the employer, not the employee.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
