Allentown, PA: Semi-Truck Loses Brakes, Injures 2 Drivers

Allentown, PA — The police in Allentown said that they don’t believe truck driver Robert Miller, 46, when he says that the brakes on his semi “failed” in last week’s accident, which left two people injured. According to Miller, his semi-truck ran a red light and crashed near a Wendy’s, causing two other vehicles to crash as well, because his brakes went out.

However, the police have investigated the accident, which happened at about 8:00 a.m. last Wednesday morning (November 18, 2015), and have said that they think Miller was likely just not paying attention.

Miller claims that he was going north on Fourth Street that morning when he blew through the light at Emmaus Road and crashed into an eastbound car. He said that his brakes went out.

The eastbound car caught fire after it crashed into Miller’s semi, but the driver escaped with non-serious injuries. After the first collision, though, an SUV crashed as it tried to avoid Miller’s semi. That driver was injured as well, but not seriously.

The police said that they are going to be citing Miller for the accident, saying that “He wasn’t paying attention one way or another.” They also reported that they investigated Miller’s truck, but didn’t find any evidence of the brakes failing.

Commentary:

I don’t want to start raining down judgement on this driver (because I’m guessing that plenty of people are already doing that), but I’m curious to know more about his background and who he was working for. If a trucker would make up a stop about brakes to avoid taking responsibility for an accident, how much can he really be trusted? Furthermore, if he was dishonest about this small accident (where nobody was killed, thankfully), then what else might we not be seeing? This article explains a little more about why truck driver background checks are so important and why employers can be liable for accidents caused by their drivers when they don’t do them.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
