Chicago, IL — A woman was injured and taken to a hospital early Monday morning (November 16, 2015) in the Chicago area after her car crashed into the back of a paving truck. This was at about 2:00 a.m. and the woman who was injured wasn’t named.
Police said that the woman had been driving her SUV south along Lake Shore Drive that morning and was on the north side of the metroplex when she accidentally hit the back of a paving truck.
It’s not clear if the paving truck was parked or in use at the time.
The young woman behind the wheel, 26 years old, was taken to a hospital and given a citation for not wearing a seat belt. However, not a lot of information about this wreck has been released yet.
Map of the Accident
Commentary:
If this paving truck was parked illegally or even just plain irresponsibly, then the company that owns it may be partially liable for this accident. As a commercial vehicle, a paving truck can’t just park anywhere it likes and hope that nobody hits it, the driver must take care to make sure it’s safely parked or at least has warning signs or lights to alert other drivers.
Obviously, the details of what happened here are scant, but let’s not jump to the conclusion that the woman here is at fault until more information is known. Like I said, it could be that the paving truck was improperly parked.
One other possible explanation for this accident might be that this driver was under the influence. If that was the case (and I’m not saying it is), then the police ought to look into whether she had been at a bar in the hours before the wreck. Lots of people are over-served in the Chicago area, which contributes to alcohol-related accidents.
