Sanilac County, MI — 55-year-old William Hahn was heading south on Brockway Road when he was t-boned by an 18-wheeler that was heading west on Galbraith Line Road.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was 78-year-old Donald Carless. He apparently stopped at the stop sign, but claims he didn’t see Hahn traveling down the road before he turned. When he turned, he struck the driver’s side of Hahn’s truck. The force of the impact caused Hahn to be pushed across the intersection, to the south side of the road.
Police are still investigating to find out how this accident may have occurred, or why Carless was not able to see Hahn’s vehicle. More information will be released at a later date.

Commentary:
While it certainly seems that the police are going to do their job and look into this, it’s often the case that drivers who aren’t doing their best to look out for other vehicles never have to face the music for their actions.
The driver was lucky in this case because he survived. Far too often, drivers of large trucks like 18-wheelers aren’t doing everything they can to watch for other vehicles on the roadway.
I don’t mean to make anyone sound like a villain, and maybe the driver in this case did look both ways before pulling out, but it seems like drivers for big trucking companies should be held to the highest standards for making sure they take safety precautions. And, if these companies are hiring careless drivers, they need to be held accountable for that.
