Fernando Munoz Injured in McFaddin, TX Drilling Blowout Accident

McFaddin, TX — A worker was badly injured and taken to a hospital while working on an oil drilling rig this past Wednesday (November 11, 2015). The worker was identified as Fernando Munoz, 45 years old, and the accident, which was a blowout, happened just south of McFaddin at a drill site operated by Arrow Drilling Company.

This happened on Wednesday morning, while Munoz was working as a derrickman on top the rig.

That morning, he was “tripping pipe” and was working with his crew when there was a large blowout and mud and oil blew into the air. The blowout struck Munoz, who was at the top of the rig, and he was trapped about 75 feet in the air until help arrived to lower him to the ground.

He was badly injured, but was not in life-threatening condition.

The Arrow Drilling Company was notified about the accident, but they didn’t make any comment to the news. M.W. Rentals & Services was another company at the drilling site when the accident occurred, but they didn’t have any workers injured.

Commentary:

According to OSHA’s records for this company, Arrow Drilling, they’ve been investigated on three separate occasions since 2006, with one investigation in 2008 at a Nueces County location that resulted in over $15,000 in fines & citations, plus 16 safety violations.

Now, I know full well that the pool & gas industry is fraught with dangerous jobs and hazards that the workers face every single day — but that doesn’t mean the safety regulations shouldn’t be treated seriously. If this company has a hard time keeping their worksite safe, then I have to wonder whether all the safety precautions were taken here to keep their workers as safe as possible in the event of a blowout.

I know that blowouts are naturally occurring and aren’t exactly predictable in the normal sense, but again, that doesn’t mean they ought to be ignored. Motorcycle riders wear helmets in the event of a crash, so I would hope that this drilling company made sure their workers would be safe in the event of an accident as well.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
