Pharr, TX: 1 Hospitalized after Semi-Truck, School Bus Accident

Pharr, TX — 1 person was taken to a hospital in Pharr last Monday, October 19, 2015 after there was an accident between a semi-truck, an SUV, and a Rio Grande Valley school bus. This happened at the intersection of Cage Boulevard and Ridge Road, police said.

It appears that the SUV was hit by the trailer of the semi-truck and pushed into back of the school bus, causing a pileup.

1 person in the SUV, believed to be a passenger, was taken to a hospital for their injuries, but their name and condition weren’t released. The school bus had about 20 middle school students aboard, but only a few were hurt. It didn’t appear any of them required medical attention, from the new reports.

They said that the semi-truck had been driving along Cage Boulevard that day when the driver tried to make a right-hand turn onto Ridge Road. However, as the truck turned, the trailer fishtailed and went into oncoming traffic, where it crashed into the dark blue SUV. From there, the SUV was forced into the back of the school bus, injuring the passenger inside.

More details will hopefully be released later.

Commentary:

If this semi-truck’s trailer fishtailed, then that may be evidence that the driver took the turn too sharply. As far as accidents with semi-truck drivers go, they can be much worse, but a mistake like this is frankly a little alarming. For someone who drives a big rig professionally, taking turn too fast is a little bit of a rookie mistake. Was there something else going on here? Any chance that this driver was distracted at the time, or looking at something other than the road? If an investigation were done and this driver was found to be negligent, he and his trucking company may be held liable for the accident and injuries here.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
