Moulton, AL — The news reports from Moulton said that a local man was injured and sent to a hospital this past Wednesday (October 14, 2015) after his pickup truck was hit by an 18-wheeler truck. This happened along Market Street on Wednesday evening, at about 5:15 p.m, and the victim was identified as Tommy Whitlow, 59 years old.
Police said that Whitlow was headed along Market Street, southbound, in his pickup truck when an 18-wheeler headed north tried to brake for a vehicle turning left in front of it.
The 18-wheeler’s brake locked up, apparently, and it jackknifed into oncoming traffic, where it hit Whitlow’s pickup.
Whitlow was hurt and rushed to a hospital, where he was last said to be in stable condition.

Commentary:
This truck driver ought to be held accountable for his actions, but I also want to stress that we don’t know much about what happened. However, if things happened the way the news reports said, then it seems an awful lot like the 18-wheeler truck just didn’t leave enough between the other car and didn’t have enough time to brake. In a normal car, this might’ve just been a fender-bender accident, but since it was a giant 18-wheeler truck, it’s a wonder it wasn’t fatal.
This is exactly why we have things like “safe following distance,” because they’re for everyone’s safety.
