Wall, NJ: Dump Truck Accident Injures 4 on Route 34

Wall Township, NJ — There was an accident along Route 34 in Wall that injured four people, including a husband and wife from Wall, 49 & 50, and a woman from Swedesboro, 41 years old. This happened on Friday morning, October 16, 2015 around 11:45 a.m.

The Swedesboro woman was driving her Hyundai north along Route 34 when she came to a stop at the red light for Belmar Boulevard.

However, a dump truck that was also headed north failed to brake in time and rear-ended her Hyundai, pushing it into the middle of the intersection. The Hyundai was then hit by a passing Dodge pickup truck, which was driven by the couple from Wall.

The Dodge truck was pushed into an 18-wheeler truck that was also sitting at the red light.

Right now, it looks like the Wall couple, the woman from Swedesboro, and the dump truck driver were all injured and rushed to different hospitals. It’s not clear how badly any of them were hurt, but it appears that the Wall couple were more seriously injured from the very limited reports released about this.

The dump truck driver was a 49-year old nan from Dingman’s Ferry, PA. It’s not clear why he didn’t stop at the red light or if he’s going to face charges.

Commentary:

Ultimately, it’s not going to be the dump truck driver who is liable for this accident, but the company that hired him. As an extension of their company, he was acting as part of them when he (allegedly) failed to stop in time for that red light. The question now remains: Will this company do the right thing and take responsibility for their employee’s actions, or will they try and skirt the issue and avoid a potentially expensive situation?

If I had to guess, based on my experience, I’d say the latter is more likely. You have to remember that companies want to protect their bottom line, even if an innocent victim has been hurt. They may offer a little compensation as a way of saying, “Sorry,” but they likely want to avoid legal action at all costs because they stand to lose quite a bit. Of course, that’s if this trucker really did fail to brake for the red light, like the news reports said.

I’m a little shocked that this wasn’t reported on a little more in the news, because this is completely unacceptable for a professional trucker, if you ask me.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
