Commentary:
Rollover accidents are quite common, but the injuries they leave folks with most definitely aren’t. That’s because a lot of cars (particularly SUVs and trucks) have a very poor track record when it comes to rollover wrecks, and sometimes it’s because of the way the car was designed. I don’t have time to go into all the gritty details here but, essentially, every car and truck manufactured in the world has to adhere to some sort of safety test. One of those tests is the rollover test, but a lot of manufacturers “cheat” by using a method that may technically pass inspection, but doesn’t actually test the integrity of the vehicle’s roof and roll cage.
Imagine dropping an egg on a pillow and declaring it to be the strongest egg in the world, impervious to drops from heights. That’s sort of what happens with a lot of SUVs, vans, and trucks on the market these days. Some vehicles are worse than others, though we obviously don’t know what kind of vehicle was involved here. At the end of the day, if a manufacturer of a vehicle has a shoddy design and someone gets hurt, the maker of the vehicle may be liable.
