Tower, MN – 17-year-old Brandon Richards was critically injured in a hit-and-run accident in Tower on Monday, August 24th, 2015. The accident happened around 10:00 am.
Richards was driving a Dodge Avenger on his way home from working at The Wilderness at Fortune Bay golf course near Tower at the time of the crash on State Highway 169 near County Road 26 south of Tower. Authorities also found a Chevy pickup truck at the scene.
The driver of the truck told authorities that a third vehicle — green, with front-end damage — had been involved and fled the scene.
Investigators determined that Richards was traveling southbound on Highway 169 and was rear-ended by the green vehicle. That caused the Dodge to veer into oncoming traffic, and it was struck by the northbound pickup truck.
Richards had to be extricated from his car.
Authorities located a green Oldsmobile Cutlass shortly thereafter which ultimately brought them to Kelly Rutar.
47-year-old Kelly Marie Rutar faces two felony and two misdemeanor counts in connection with the accident.
