Corpus Christi: Bicyclist Hit and Injured by Truck on Everhart

Corpus Christi, TX — There was an accident reported last Thursday (September 10, 2015) that involved a bicyclist and a pickup truck. Police said that a 19-year old man on a bicycle was rushed to a hospital after he was hit by a pickup truck at the intersection of Everhart Street and Staples Street.

The accident happened at about 3:30 p.m. in the afternoon that day, but it was actually captured by a dashcam from another vehicle.

Later, the video was made available and can be seen here.

It appears that the 19-year old starts to cross the intersection and is hit by a heavy-duty pickup truck hauling a trailer. It looks as if the truck was trying to make a right turn near the Valvoline gas station.

The news later confirmed that the pickup truck driver was charged for failing to yield.

Commentary:

The video in the link above is quite disturbing because it’s evident that this driver just wasn’t paying attention at all, as shown by the apparent lack of braking. The other thing that I found to be a little disturbing was the fact that this truck looks like it’s a commercially-used vehicle. That is, it’s not your average F-150 driven, it looks like a work truck that’s being used for business purposes.

Why is that important? Well, essentially, this driver may have been “on the job” at the time of the accident, meaning that his employer might be the one who ultimately answers for this accident. Obviously, we don’t know who the driver is, but if he was working for a company, then they ought to be falling all over themselves to make things right with the victim.

Anyone in a company vehicle has a duty to be extra careful on the road, especially in a big truck like that, which can do some serious damage in a wreck. I’d also like to point out that it looks like it’s raining when this all took place — another reason for this driver to be on the lookout for accidents in the making.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
