Commentary:
This accident really bothers me. I know that news sources are reporting that these six kids received minor injuries, but they’re not always accurate. If I understand things correctly, these kids were on their school bus, on the way to school, when the driver hit another vehicle with enough force to warrant sending some of them to the hospital. I’m happy to hear that this accident doesn’t sound as severe as it could have been. But I can’t help feeling like someone should still be held responsible.
If there was some kind of failure on the part of the bus: the brakes malfunctioned, the tires failed to grip the surface of the road properly, etc., then I hope investigators realize that so the bus can receive proper maintenance or defective parts can be replaced.
If the driver was distracted, that’s another issue. At 8:30 am, when drivers are in a hurry to get to work, drop their kids off at school, and you’re driving a large school bus filled with children, you should be operating at the height of alertness. Now, I realize accidents happen. I may not have all the details. Maybe the driver had a medical emergency, or the vehicle swerved suddenly into the lane in front of the bus not allowing enough room to brake. But I see no mention of that in the report. So, I just don’t know.
All I know is, children got on a school bus to be taken to school and some were taken to the hospital instead. Someone should have to answer for that, and people deserve to know what really happened.
