Dallas, TX: Bicyclist Injured by Car Accident, Driver Arrested for DUI

Dallas, TX — The police in Dallas have arrested the man pictured here, 24-year old John Cullins, for suspected DUI after he crashed his car into a young woman riding her bicycle. This was in the downtown area of Dallas, along South Munger Boulevard.

The woman who was injured hasn’t been named.

Police said that this took place where the Santa Fe Trail intersects with Munger Boulevard. Allegedly, Cullins was driving his car along Munger this past Wednesday night (September 9, 2015) when he crashed into a 26-year old woman who was crossing the road on her bicycle.

The police report shows that the woman had the crossing signal while Cullins had a red light. However, Cullins failed to stop and crashed into the woman.

She was rushed to a hospital to be treated, and at the last update, she was still in serious condition.

Cullins, on the other hand, was charged with DUI after police said that he was under the influence at the time.

Commentary:

If what I’m reading in the news is correct, it looks like drugs might be the cause of this accident, not necessarily alcohol — according to an update. What does that matter? Well, sometimes auto insurance policies have clauses that talk about “criminal negligence,” which refers to any kind of accident caused by criminal offenses. This includes using drugs. While it’s a bit of a weak defense (any lawyer worth their salt knows how to defeat it), that doesn’t stop insurance companies from trying to use it on folks.

Now, I don’t know much about this particular accident except what I read in the news, but people get fairly upset when they hear about an impaired driver hurting someone. Rightly so, it’s an offensive idea. However, what I’ve just described is also offensive as well. The way I see it, insurance companies ought to hold true to their word and not try to slip and dodge coverage every chance they get, which unfortunately happens a lot in drug-related accidents.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
