Chicago, IL — It looks like two people were taken to the hospital after last Friday’s accident in Chicago between an Amtrak passenger train and a loaded-down dump truck. Police said that the train crashed into the dump truck on Friday afternoon, September 4, 2015 at about 2:15 p.m.
From the news reports, it appears that the dump truck was driving along Devon Avenue that afternoon when it failed to stop at the railroad tracks and drove into the path of a westbound Amtrak train.
The two collided, leaving two folks on the train injured.
Police said those people were treated for non life-threatening injuries, and were believed to be in stable condition. The truck driver wasn’t harmed, but may face a citation later from the police.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, though more than one source has suggested that the trucker wasn’t paying attention.

Commentary:
I can’t speak to what might’ve caused this to happen, but I would suspect that the trucking company that owns this dump truck is going to be more than a little nervous in the coming days. After all, it appears as if their driver may have been at fault, which means that they would (by default) responsible for these passengers’ injuries. I would be curious, though, to learn why this dump truck didn’t stop in time for the train. Did the driver not see the signs, lights, or crossing arms? Did the intersection even have those things?
