Golden, CO Construction Worker Hit, Injured by Dump Truck

Golden, CO — A worker with a local construction company had pulled over on Highway 58 this past Tuesday and was setting out warning signs on the highway when a passing dump truck hit him. He was seriously injured and rushed to a hospital, but his name hasn’t been released.

The news said that this happened around 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 24, at Highway 58’s intersection with 44th Avenue.

According to the reports, the construction worker pulled his truck over to the side of Highway 58 and was preparing to put warning signs when a dump truck clipped him.

The dump truck driver stayed at the scene and told police that the worker and his truck were partially in the road at the time of the accident. So far, that hasn’t been verified, since the CSP is working on their own investigation concerning what happened.

Commentary:

There seems to be a little confusion on what really happened here. On the one hand, folks are saying that this dump truck driver should have been paying more attention to the road and maybe switched lanes when he saw this construction worker set out the signs. On the other hand, though, the news seems to insinuate that the construction worker was the one in the wrong for not parking far enough out of the way.

Since I wasn’t there, I can only speak to what I know about these situations in general. First, I would look into how much time elapsed between this construction worker parking his truck on the side of the highway and the dump truck hitting him. If it was mere seconds, then that’s one thing. But if the dump truck had plenty of time to notice the worker in the road, but didn’t, then that seems like inattentive driving on the trucker’s part.

Clearly, there needs to be a little more investigation, though, before folks start pointing fingers.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
