Georgetown, DE — A driver in a pickup truck – an unnamed man – was injured and sent to Beebe Hospital on Monday of this week after he was hit by a dump truck on Route 9. The accident happened at the intersection of Route 9 and Gravel Hill Road, the news reports stated. According to them, a dump truck was driving west along Route 9 on Monday around midday when the driver apparently ran the red light at Gravel Hill Road, hitting the side of a pickup truck that was crossing the intersection.

Though the man in the pickup truck was rushed to a hospital for his injuries (which were not life-threatening), the dump truck driver wasn’t hurt. He was later identified as Jerrin Hall and was from Felton.

He was ticketed for the accident.

Commentary:

It’s a good thing that this accident wasn’t more serious because a dump truck of that size could really hurt someone. In fact, it’s downright amazing that a large dump truck like that could run a red light and not cause life-threatening injuries or even death.

If I’m reading the news reports correctly, it looks like this trucker is facing a ticket/citation for his mistake here, but that will probably do very little to actually remedy the damage done here. I’m talking about the damage to the vehicles and the injuries suffered by the man in the pickup. For that, both the dump truck driver and the company he worked for may be expected to step up to the plate here, in a manner of speaking.

At the end of the day, the dump truck driver is answerable to his employer, who in turns is answerable to the public when one of their employees messes up and causes an accident. This kind of thing simply can’t be dealt with lightly because stopping dangerous truck driving absolutely must be a priority if we want our roads to be safe.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
