Chatham, NY — Police identified Robert Fournier as the man who was killed in Chatham, New York, while removing tree debris on Monday, August 17, 2015. The accident took place on Howe Road.
Local reports say that the 50-year-old Fournier was in a bucket truck about 30 feet in the air when the trucks hydraulic system gave out, causing the boom to collapse for Fournier to be thrown to the ground below.
Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
What caused the truck’s hydraulic system to fail is not clear. Officials are still investigating.

This is an accident in which I’d make sure the truck that the victim was using was thoroughly inspected. That’s something that needs to happen anytime any machinery or equipment is involved in an accident. The thing is, if this happened because the bucket truck Fournier was using was somehow defective, or had malfunctioned, then it’s possible that liability is going to fall on the manufacturer. These systems obviously aren’t designed to operate in this way, so those involved need to find out why this time, it did.
