Clear Springs, MD — There was a serious accident reported out that Hicksville Planing Mill in Clear Spring that left a worker with injuries. Police said that a man (who may have worked at the mill) was accidentally impaled by a piece of wood that was being cut.
The accident was reported around 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning of this week (August 11, 2015) and it looks like this man was the only person harmed. After he was rushed to a hospital via medical helicopter, it was said that he was not in life-threatening condition.
The cause of the accident is still being examined, as the Hicksville Planing Mill didn’t provide much detail. They said that a 1″ wide board that was about 3/4 of a foot long was shot into the man and impaled him.
So far, the man’s name hasn’t been released and it’s not clear if he worked at the mill or was a customer.

There are some mills that will let customers use the machinery if they wish to plane their own lumber. I don’t know much about this particular mill (they’ve never been investigated by OSHA), but I hope that isn’t the case. Hopefully, they had all the right kind of safety equipment and gear for their workers. Most of the time, wood shoots out of a mill or saw because of tension on the blade. This is usually caused by the wood being forced into the blade at a bad angle.
