Berkeley, CA — More than twenty people were taken to local hospitals after an accident that involved eight vehicles, one of them a school bus full of kids, on Monday, August 10, 2015. The accident took place on Interstate 80.

Local sources say that a school bus taking a group of children to a local park crashed into a vehicle driving ahead of it. This set of a chain reaction with six other vehicles. Police say that most of the injuries caused by the accident were minor.

In all, 23 people were taken to local hospitals for treatment. Another 17 were not injured. Twenty kids and adults were on board the school bus, which was being used by Camp Kee Tov. The school bus had no seat belts.

What caused the accident is unknown. Local sources are currently investigating.

Accidents involving, or rather, caused, by school buses are usually a little tricky because the bus is usually owned by the state. That means that they enjoy certain government protections. However, this school bus was being used by a local day camp, which I’m assuming is a private business. That means that they would be subject to the same processes as anyone else who caused an accident like this.

Look, this accident was nowhere near as bad as it could have been. I’m not going to sit here and trying making a case for keeping the bus driver from behind the wheel for the rest of their lives. That’s a little extreme. However, children were hurt here. And if it happened because a bus rear-ended someone on the highway, that means the driver was either following someone too closely, driving too fast, or just wasn’t paying attention. They don’t need to be locked up because of it, but they do need to be held accountable. They’re transporting a group of children, and should be held to a higher standard.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
