Trucker Flown to Hospital after Semi Crashes on Route 63 in Clinton

Clinton, IN — There was a major wreck last night (Thursday, August 6, 2015) that left the driver of a lumber truck with serious injuries. Police said that they responded to a call around 11:30 p.m. and found a semi-truck hauling lumber that had crashed off Route 63, leaving the driver hurt.

His name wasn’t released, but the police said that he was flown to a hospital.

The damage to the truck was severe and the trucker was evidently stuck in the cab for more than 2 hours that night before he could be cut free.

The accident happened just south of Clinton, they said, when the semi-truck swerved off the side of the highway for unknown reasons and hit the guardrail.

Commentary:

There weren’t a lot of details released here, but I know some folks have a tendency to assume the worst when presented with little information. It’d be easy to simply assume that this trucker probably drifted off to sleep behind the wheel or did something else to cause this accident, but I don’t think that’s very fair to the driver — do you? One thing that might need to be investigated here is the actual semi-truck itself, because it seems to me that it’s possible a mechanical issue could’ve been the real culprit.

Semi-trucks are big machines with a lot of moving parts. If you don’t service and repair them regularly, things start to go wrong. I’m not trying to insinuate that this truck wasn’t up to par or anything like that, I just want my readers to remember that accidents are sometimes caused by things other than the driver. An example would be a broken steering column, or even failed air brakes.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
