USPS Driver Don Hutzel Hurt after Accident with 18-Wheeler Truck

Milford, Iowa — There was an accident reported out in rural Milford this past Wednesday (August 5, 2015) that left a USPS worker with injuries. The news said that Don Hutzel, 52 years old, was injured after the car he was driving was hit by an 18-wheeler truck at a rural intersection.

Hutzel’s car had a USPS decal, indicating that it was associated with the United State Postal Service.

The accident I’m talking about happened yesterday morning around 9:45 a.m. Hutzel was driving his car, a dark blue Buick, north along 100th Avenue that morning when he came to the intersection with 250th Street, where an 18-wheeler truck was headed west.

It looks like both the 18-wheeler and the Buick entered the intersection at the same time, causing major damage to the rear-passenger side of the Buick. Don Hutzel was injured as a result and had to taken to two different hospitals.

The semi-truck driver, though, wasn’t harmed. He was identified as 44-year old Kent Bloomer. Police said they aren’t sure who was at fault, as some very tall corn obstructed both drivers’ view.

Commentary:

It sounds like this is one of those situations where both parties involved would probably say that the other guy was at fault. So how do you get to the bottom of it? Well, the best place to start is by looking at the official police report and then, if necessary, conducting a more solid investigation in private. It looks like the semi-truck involved in this accident was owned by a transportation company, so if their driver is found to be at fault, then they may be liable for his mistakes.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
