Man Seriously Injured after Wreck Involving Garbage Truck on Middlebelt Road

West Bloomfield, MI — There was a major accident reported on Monday afternoon, July 20, 2015 after a garbage truck and a van collided with each other. This happened in the West Bloomfield Township along Middlebelt Road, near Walnut Lake.

The police weren’t exactly sure what happened, but said that it appears a van crashed into the back of a garbage truck that was stopped and picking up some trash.

This happened around 3:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon.

The van was reportedly headed along Middlebelt Road when it rear-ended a garbage truck. The man in the van, 73 years old, was rushed to a hospital by paramedics and the last update said that he was in moderate-to-serious condition.

No names have been released so far.

Commentary:

One of the reports I read added that the victim here was trapped inside his car for a period of time, which suggests that perhaps speed was a factor here. The thing that confuses me is this: how fast was the speed limit on that stretch of road and did this garbage truck have any kind of warning sounds or lights on display to warn other drivers? Contrary to what some believe, garbage trucks don’t own the road, they have to abide by rules just like we do. If the garbage truck’s driver was improperly parked or pulled over, he may be liable for any injuries this wreck caused. On the other hand, it’s possible that the news got it right and the victim here is at fault after all. But it’s best not to pass judgement in these situations until u>all of the details are released.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
