Austin, TX — Two bicyclists were hospitalized after an alleged drunk driving accident in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, August 2, 2015. The accident took place on South First Street, near Barton Springs Road, around 6:30 in the morning.
Police have identified the man responsible for the accident as 23-year-old Jake Rupp. Rupp was charged with intoxication assault after hitting two professional cyclists who out riding early Sunday morning.
The two cyclists injured in the accident haven’t had their names released. The men were taken to Univesity Medical Center Brackenridge. One had a broken foot, while the other had a broken back.
The accident is still being investigated.

Texas law forbids bars and similar establishments from serving anyone they find to be obviously intoxicated. If a bar chooses to ignore that law and over-serve a customer, they can be held liable for any accident caused by that customer. So, that right there is reason enough to check and see if a bar was involved in any DUI accident. However, even if no bar was involved, the driver involved here still hit two bicyclists, and police say he was under the influence when the accident happened. That’s something the man needs to be held accountable for. Hopefully, it’ll keep him from being involved in another accident like this somewhere down the line.
