Police ID Ernest Brown as Injured Trucker after Route 22 Accident

Fredericksburg, PA — A truck driver from Palmyra was hurt and sent to the hospital after his concrete truck was in an accident that was caused by a tractor-trailer. This happened on Route 22 last Thursday, July 23, 2015 at the intersection with Route 343/Legionnaire Drive. The injured trucker was identified as Ernest Brown, 57 years old.

The police in Fredericksburg said that Brown was driving his concrete truck east on Route 22 that afternoon while a tractor-trailer driven by 60-year old Tennessee resident Rodney Spegal was headed south on Route 343.

Apparently, Spegal drove onto Route 22 and failed to yield to Brown’s concrete truck, causing the two to collide.

Brown’s concrete truck lost control and crashed through the side of the guardrail, flipping over as it fell down an embankment. The concrete truck also spilled some concrete into Elizabeth Run creek, police said.

Brown was found inside his truck, trapped, and was rushed to a hospital.

The accident didn’t injured Mr. Spegal. He may face some charges later, but that’s not clear right now.

Commentary:

I’m surprised that the police didn’t make a bigger deal about the way this tractor-trailer drive apparently drove right into the victim’s path. If I were investigating this, I’d be curious to find out how someone who presumably drives trucks for a living misses something as large as a concrete truck in traffic.

Was he even paying attention that afternoon? We handle cases all the time where truckers are on their cellphones, and all it takes is a quick check to nearby cell towers to see if his phone pinged it in the moments leading up to the accident.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
