Carmel, IN — Two people were hospitalized following an accident in Carmel, Indiana, on Thursday, July 16, 2015. Local reports say that the late-night accident took place at the intersection of 116th and North Meridian streets.
A construction worker had delivered a load of steel beams to an overpass project when he was hit by a passing vehicle. The vehicle went on to roll over several times, although the driver was able to climb out after it came to a stop.
The driver of the vehicle, as well as the construction worker, were both taken to the trauma center at St. Vincent Hospital and have been listed in critical condition.
Why the accident happened is unknown. Police are currently investigating.

Anytime an accident like this happens, the employer will typically have a workers’ comp policy that will step on and provide benefits to the injured worker, which can be put toward medical bills and lost wages, or things like that. These same workers’ comp policies usually bar an employee from filing a claim against their employer. However, that doesn’t apply when the accident was caused by an outside party, as it was in this case. In accidents like this, the injured worker is free to file a claim against the third party responsible for the accident, while still remaining eligible for the workers’ comp benefits, as the accident still happened on-the-job.
