Man Badly Injured in Decatur, TX after Accident with Pickup Truck near Airport

Decatur, TX — On the north side of Decatur, along Old Decatur Road and FM 730, there was a serious head-on wreck reported on Wednesday of this week. Police said that at about 2:15 p.m. on July 15, 2015 two white pickup trucks collided head-on, leaving one of the drivers with serious injuries.

That driver’s name wasn’t released, but he was taken to a hospital via medical helicopter after the paramedics cut him out of his truck.

The accident happened when one of the drivers, later identified as 60-year old Kyle Stephens, looked away from the road and accident swerved into the other driver’s lane. The news quoted Stephens as telling the police that he was driving his work truck south that afternoon when he looked down at his notes.

By the time he looked back up at the road, he was in the wrong lane and crashed head-on into a white Chevy truck. Stephens wasn’t harmed by the accident, but the man in the white Chevy was badly injured and had to be airlifted to a hospital. ‘

His name wasn’t released.

Commentary:

From what I can tell, it looks like this man whose fault this was had a truck that was owned by a company of some sort. To some people, that might be innocuous information, but to a trained eye, that means that a worker on the job hurt an innocent third party. What does that mean, in practical terms?

Well, not only is this driver responsible for his actions behind the wheel, so is the company he worked for. If he was on the clock when this happened, then the company that employed him would likely be legally obligated to answer for the accident. That means that their insurance policy, whatever it is, would be taking care of things, not the driver’s.

Of course, there could be a mix-up at the news station or some of the details could be wrong, but that’s what I read and I thought I’d share a bit of the “legalese” that goes on behind the scenes here on my blog.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
