Knoxville, TN — Two people — a 46-year-old and a 9-year-old — were hospitalized after being hit by a passing van while crossing the street in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Wednesday, July 15, 2015. The accident took place at the intersection of North Broadway and Cecil Avenue, around 5:00 in the afternoon.
The two involved in the accident were identified as Francisca Pelico and Meriela Sontay. Local reports say that Pelico was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, while Sontay was treated at the scene. Their exact conditions are unknown.
The two were in the middle of a crosswalk when they were hit by a Chevrolet Express van being driven by 54-year-old Thomas Sherman. Police say that it doesn’t appear as if Sherman was impaired at the time. Police say that the victims were walking through the crosswalk while Sherman had a red light. The light turns green before the victims had reached the other side, and accelerated through the intersection. Charges are currently pending against him.
No other injuries were reported. Police are continuing with their investigation.
