Taxicab Runs Over Nin Chen on Broad Street in Red Bank, NY and Leaves Him Injured

Red Bank, New York — A man was sent to a hospital yesterday morning (Thursday, July 9, 2015) after a taxicab accidentally crashed into him in Red Bank as he was crossing the street. This happened around 11:00 a.m. Thursday morning along Broad Street at the intersection of Linden Place. The injured man was identified as 36-year old Nin Chen, from Brooklyn.

According to the news reports so far, Chen was walking across Broad Street that morning when cab driver Douglas Renigan, 73, crashed into him.

Later, the police investigated this and said that Renigan claims he saw Chen crossing the road in front of him, but crashed into him anyway. Chen was confirmed to have been using a crosswalk at the time of the accident.

He was taken to a hospital for leg injuries and lacerations afterward and didn’t appear to be a life-threatening condition.

The cab driver here, Douglas Renigan, was cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian and for careless driving. At the time, he was working for Red Bank Yellow Cab

Commentary:

I read about this accident and, to be honest, was a little shocked to hear that a professional driver in New York had accidentally hit an innocent man crossing the street. Many times, accidents like this are actually the fault of the pedestrian, but that doesn’t seem to be the case here. From what I can tell, this taxi driver made a pretty big error in judgement in not stopping in time — especially considering that the news is telling us the taxi driver admitted to seeing the man in the street.

There was another accident involving a box truck here a few weeks ago that killed an elderly woman on Broad Street, I’m sure many remember it. Is this normal for this area of town? Is the visibility exceedingly poor on this road, or are these drivers just not paying enough attention behind the wheel?

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
