Commentary:
Reports painted a picture of an erratically driving tractor-trailer plowing into a number of vehicles on the roadway, and if this is true, I’d be putting the truck driver under a microscope. Additionally, if the reports are accurate, I’d be willing to bet that the trucking company is going to try to distance themselves from the truck driver, especially if investigation finds he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the accident. Ultimately though, the trucking company interviewed, vetted, hired, trained, and trusted an 80,000 lb truck to somebody, and if that person winds up killing or hurting somebody on the road when they were DWI, the trucking company needs to answer for the actions of their subordinate, and quickly.
Sadly, the trucking industry is in the business of padding profits, and answering to shareholders and big wigs, not the people they effect when they make mistakes. I’ve seen a trucking company try and weasel out of taking accountability for a hit-and-run truck driver under the influence of narcotics, so seeing them try to snake out of something like this wouldn’t surprise me in the least.
It’s unfortunate, but it takes a little bit of legal arm twisting to get these companies to do anything, especially take responsibility.
