School Bus Accident Injures Girl, 7, on Hilltop Drive in Cedar Hill, MO

Cedar Hill, MO — A school bus was dropping kids off at the end of the school day last Thursday (June 25, 2015) in the Cedar Hill area when a young girl was accidentally hit by the bus. This happened along Hilltop Drive and the girl and her brother were apparently exiting the bus when this happened.

The news reports aren’t very clear about what took place, exactly, but it appears that the bus had let off this 7-year old girl and her brother that afternoon when the girl bent down to pick something up.

Unfortunately, the bus started driving away before the girl was clear of it and she was hit. Paramedics wee called to the scene after the girl’s brother rushed her to their home nearby.

A medical helicopter was then called and transported her to a hospital. The police said they’re going to try and investigate this further, as they’re not sure whether the bus driver here will face any charges.

Commentary:

In regards to the bus driver, I’m sure this person was being careful didn’t mean for this to happen in any way. However, the fact of the matter is that a child was seriously hurt getting off a bus — how did this happen? There’s some inherent risk in walking to and from the school bus everyday, but surely we can agree that a bus driver taking off without first checking to make sure the area is clear is pretty irresponsible, right? If that’s what happened here, then this driver ought to be held accountable for this child’s injuries, since it was their job to make the bus as safe as possible for children.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
