The first question that sprung into my mind when I read about this accident was, “How closely was the semi following the van?” Anytime you or I are on the road and the vehicle ahead of us slows down, what do we do? We slow down, too. Why wasn’t the semi able to do that here? Yes, it takes semi trucks longer to slow down than it does other vehicles, but the driver should know that, and take care not to follow vehicles so closely. The accident is still being investigated, but from what we know of the crash so far, this could have been easily avoided.
